LIKE SANDS OF THE HOURGLASS, SO GO THE DAYS UNTIL THE ELECTION

In our last issue, we pointed out the sluggish pace of implementing the CalPlan due to Gerry Parsky being both a piker with Team Cal funds and did not honor his promise to raise millions for the state party. A reader took issue with our statement that the party had hired just a single field representative.

“Three hired and I'll hire one this week!!!” exclaimed this particular party player.

FOUR field reps? Well, knock us over with a feather! With just 118 days until the election, it is certainly a relief to know our expansive state will be so thoroughly covered! (FYI: as a measuring stick, the CRP usually has 20 or so field reps to cover the state during a general election. At this rate, by the time all field reps are hired and getting to know their areas, the election will be over).

Well, how is the party’s election mobilization moving along? Like molasses, thanks to Gerry Parsky’s inexplicable refusal to fund key state party operations.

For instance, a few months ago the CRP board approved $40,000 for producing collateral materials featuring President Bush, but no action has been taken because Parsky’s refuses to give the party the necessary funds.

Parsky continues to withhold funds to update the voter file – which is kind of an important project in an election year. The state party had to take $12,000 from normal operating funds just to get this going. The same goes for the Victory 2002 staff – no moolah from Gerry Moneybags, forcing the party to advance funds from its normal operating budget.

Parsky promised to raise enormous sums of money for the California Republican Party in exchange for control of the CRP. He got the latter, but we’re still waiting for the former. Parsky promised to deliver a slew of Cabinet officials for fundraisers, but there are none –- nada – scheduled to visit California this election summer.

Parsky is sitting on nearly a million dollars in the Team Cal account, but refuses to give the party a dime for critical aspects of the political plan. Earth to Gerry – that money won’t elect anybody if it’s still sitting in the bank on November 6.

Parsky pledges his loyalty to the President and vows to work prodigiously to put California in Bush’s column in 2004 – which is wonderful and commendable because we all love the President, too. But there is a fairly important election between now and 2004, and the President’s cause would be helped mightily if we can elect more Republicans to statewide office, especially the governorship. That seems pretty obvious to us, but we’re still waiting for Gerry to figure it out.
