GERRY PARSKY – A PROFILE IN COWARDICE

Gerry Parsky fancies himself the President’s California shogun – ruling in the name of the emperor. What a shame he lacks the President’s moral courage and fortitude.

Parsky’s profile in cowardice is on vivid display regarding the embarrassing race-controversy engulfing the state party, courtesy of Bill Back and his white rancher buddy Randy Ridgel. During last week’s telephone CRP board meeting, a motion was made to censure Bill Back and Randy Ridgel for fueling this humiliating episode with inflammatory rhetoric, desultory denials and unconvincing apologies, and asking them to please knock it off.

As the motion was being made, Gerry Parsky and seven other board members – including Tom Stephenson, vice chairman candidate Mario Rodriguez and megacephalic Republican National Committeewomen Barbara Alby – promptly dropped off the call.

The reason for this bizarre simultaneous hang up: to deny a quorum and thereby stop the censure motion.

No debate, no discussion. Not even the guts to openly disagree. Just a hurried click of the receiver like a teenager making a prank call.

There’s courage for you. These same folks have no problem censuring Shawn Steel for criticizing big business for funding the same Democrats who have turned California into a entrepreneurial hell – and no problem undertaking such petty vengeances as refusing to pay for travel and accommodations for Steel’s final convention as chairman.

But when it comes to simply mustering the backbone to censure two adolescent boobs whose recklessness is inflicting horrible damage to the public’s perception of the California Republican Party – Parsky and his Seven Hoods run for the tall grass.

Unlike the man he presumes to speak for – after all, President Bush denounced Trent Lott’s remarks rather than duck and cover -- Parsky has been a picture of conspicuous silence. He neither condemns Back and Ridgel for their morally backward, horribly damaging, and incomprehensibly stupid actions and opinions, nor offers them any support (after all, Back is Parsky’s toady candidate for chairman). Instead, he remains quietly in the shadows.

That’s leadership for you.
