Preventing CRP leaders from meeting President
Parsky Watch #45

PARTY GONE OUT OF BOUNDS?

“Who’s to blame when parties really get out of hand? Who’s to blame when they get poorly planned?”

We’re not generally one’s for quoting The B-52’s, but this lyric could have been have been written about Gerry Parsky – both the general incompetence he’s shown these long, miserable months, and the specific way he’s bulloxed the President’s recent visit to California in terms of being a party leader.

Of course, the President’s visit will be a success in terms of communicating his message to Americans and bolstering his profile here in the Golden State.

What we’re talking about is Parsky’s incompetence in terms of being a party leader. It’s odd and tragic that Parsky’s ability to discharge his role as a party leader is inversely proportional to the greediness with which he has grasped and clutched that role tightly.

This is only the 7th time President Bush has visited California since entering the White House – a testament to Parsky’s embarrassing failure to live up to his promises 9but more about that another time).

Considering Parsky’s adamancy about controlling every aspect of California Republican Party operations, it is striking that he has given the CRP zero involvement in the Bush visit.

For example: the President comes to San Diego. Ron Nehring, the very capable chairman of the San Diego County GOP, is not involved with the visit. Neither is the CRP Southern California chair, Ketih Carlson. They are both on the CRP Board of Directors, yet received no notice. There are no rallies for the party faithful, no activist involvement. Just Gerry grafting himself on to the President.

Then it is on to the Silicon Valley. Once again, Parsky has failed to involve the chairman of the Santa Clara County Republican Party is not involved. Same with the CRP Bay Area chairman, Jim Hartman.

The most Parsky can manage is offering CRP board members 2 tickets to the Silicon Valley event – along with the rest of humanity.

We won’t even ask why Gerry Parsky failed to secure the President for a CRP fundraiser – which the state party needs like drunk needs an AA meeting.

Is this any way to run a party?

Memo to Gerry: the best way to generate enthusiasm among Republican activists is to get them close to a Republican president. Your fellow board members serve because they love this party and want to advance its principles. They are your link to the grass roots – when they get enthusiastic and motivated, that enthusiasm is transmitted back to the grass roots, who are then re-charged for party-building activities like voter registration, stuffing envelopes, walking precincts (you’ve heard of those things, haven’t you Gerry?).

It just so happens there was a popular, charismatic Republican President of the United States here in California last week. After all, you succeeded in depriving volunteers of any effective voice in the governance of their party, it would have been nice if some priority was placed on having CRP volunteer leaders actually meet someone like the President who’s actually interested in building the party, instead of just stepping on it.
