Parsky discovers the Recall Parsky Watch #50
July 25, 2003
CAPTAIN PARSKY FINALLY SEES THE ICEBERG OF REALITY
"We don't want to shift our focus," Parsky said. "We understand why voters of California would be upset with the financial condition that exists," he said of the state budget crisis, poor economy and anticipated tax increases driving voter discontent with Davis. "If that results in a recall, then that is something that we will have to build into our matrix in terms of getting the president re-elected."
--Gerry Parsky in the Sacramento Bee, July 22, 2003.
After reading that quote, it’s clear that Gerry Parsky would have made a great captain of the Titanic: “We understand why passengers on the Titanic would be upset with ship’s condition that exists," Captain Gerry Parsky said of the gaping hole torn in the side of his ship by a huge iceberg, warnings of which he had repeatedly ignored. "If that results in the Titanic sinking, then that is something that we will have to build into our matrix in terms of reaching New York harbor."
In the weird parallel California inhabited by Gerry Parsky, there has been no Davis recall. At least, that’s the impression one gets after reading Gerry’s July 23 Team-Cal update, which mystifyingly omits any mention of the recall (incredible when you consider Secretary of State Kevin Shelley certified the recall the very same day). In Parskyfornia, there is only a wondrous GOP Shangri-la where donor and activist “work hand in hand to deliver the resources necessary to carry California for Republicans” beneath the benignly smiling countenance of our Glorious Leader, Chairman Gerry.
Here in the real California where the rest of us live, the Davis recall has been the overriding reality for California Republicans. Parsky has been robotically fixated on “re-electing President Bush. Now, we concede to no one in our desire to see the President elected to a second term. But that is fifteen months away, and the recall is only a little more than ten weeks away.
However, we’ve become aware of new evidence that reality is beginning to intrude upon Parskyfornia – maybe because the election has now been scheduled. Parsky factotum Lorelei Kinder has contacted a prominent recall leader, inviting him to enter Gerry’s inner sanctum for a “discussion” of strategies for winning the recall.
An interesting invitation coming from a guy who has consistently downplayed, dismissed and generally pooh-poohed the recall at every opportunity. Better late than never, we suppose, but we have to wonder why Parsky wants to help now, when to date he has prevented the state GOP from providing the recall effort with ANY help. After all, in the past the CRP has mailed out thousands of petitions to support Assembly recall campaigns when control of that body was at stake. Why has Gerry stayed the party’s hand when the big magilla – the governorship of the largest state in the Union – is at stake?
In addition to this passive resistance, Purse-Strings Parsky has allowed the CRP’s $10,000 per month communications consultant, Rob Stutzman, to attack the recall in the media.
In contrast to his sudden interest in winning the recall, Parsky in April prevented the CRP from mailing a pro-recall letter signed by Sen. Tom McClintock.
But hey, we want Davis recalled, so if Gerry genuinely wants to lend a hand, welcome aboard. Perhaps it is a signal that his masters in the White House have shifted positions and now embrace the recall. After all, it has done more in a few months to energize and resurrect the California Republican Party than all of Parsky’s vaunted reforms and “leadership” put together. The recall – not Gerry’s TeamCal – that is the true example of activists working hand in hand with a donor (of vision and nerve, unlike Gerry and the rest of hand-wringing, defeatist “donor community”’) to carry California for Republicans.
