PARSKY CLAIMS PATERNITY FOR CALI GOP PREGNANT WITH SUCCESS

There’s an old saying that victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan. Here in California, Gerry Parsky is attempting to establish paternity for the California GOP’s current upsurge.

Republican registration is growing at a rate of 10,000 a month. State party coffers are full and getting fuller by the day. Assembly and Senate Republicans are increasingly optimistic about gaining seats in November. By some strange coincidence, these sea changes in party fortunes only began AFTER Parsky stepped down as CRP shogun and Arnold was elected governor (who just raised $2 million for the state GOP in a single night on Monday).

Listening to Gerry Parsky, however, you’d think this was all part of an ingenious master plan he set in motion in 1999. "As I've said all along, we plan to win ... and complete the mission we started in 1999,'' Parsky recently told the San Diego Union-Tribune. That’s right, Gerry – it’s all part of the plan.

Hmmm…that would be the same “mission” that included Parsky convincing the Bush-Cheney campaign to spend $10 million in California in 2000, with the end result of Al Gore winning be a larger margin than the polls gave him when the Parsky got the green light for the spending spree? Is this the same “mission” that included Parsky raising $10 million for the CRP and bringing in a flood of Bush Cabinet officers to raise truckloads of cash (neither of which coming even close to happening)? Is this the same “mission” that deliberately diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars from Tom McClintock’s nearly-victorious 2002 controller race, and shoveled many into statewide candidacies that were ultimately blown-out? Is this the same “mission” that consistently dismissed, downplayed and generally pooh-poohed the Davis recall until virtually the last days of the campaign?

Call us crazy, Gerry, but most sentient observers would point to the Davis recall and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the indispensable catalysts that have produced the incipient Republican renaissance. Parsky’s relationship to GOP fortunes has been more like an appendix to the human body: at best it does no harm, at worst it can burst and cause infection and death.
