GERRY PARSKY’S MONEY PIT

Given that Gerry Parsky is an enormously wealthy man, it follows that he possesses a keen sense of how to make money. The mystery is why Parsky is so weirdly incapable of transferring that expertise to state party operations. Where are the millions Parsky promised following his coup?

A good example is the mismanagement of the biennial state party conventions, which use to be net moneymakers, normally raising $100,000 or so for party coffers. However, since Gerry Parsky gutted the chairman’s authority and grabbed the state party reins for himself, he has turned these money-makers into money pits.

Parsky inexplicably decided to pay conservative mercenary Lorelei Kinder to run the February 2002 convention – the first one since his successful party takeover. Under Lorelei’s masterful mismanagement, the February convention lost – that’s right, lost – $109,455.58.

This isn’t rocket science. Past chairmen usually lined up a cornerstone sponsor who paid $50,000 and two smaller sponsors at $10,000K. Parsky and Kinder did neither. Not only that, they didn’t bother to check how much the meals would cost – subsequently, the price of the luncheon and dinner events was less than the cost – the party lost money with every ticket sold. Likewise regarding registration: the price didn’t cover the cost. This is basic stuff. Taking a sure-fire money-making event like the state party conventions and actually losing $110,000 demolishes a cherished rationalization of Gerry Parsky’s sycophants and toadies – that whatever you may think of their philosophy – or lack thereof – at least the party will be run in an efficient, business-like manner.

However, this rationalization this turns out to be patently false, as well. The state party is clearly not being run in an efficient, business-like manner – unless you think Enron was an example of efficient, business-like operations. As one party insider succinctly summed it up: “I thought the Parsky reforms were suppose to protect donors’ money -- not piss it away.”

That said, you’d think the businessman’s approach to the staunching the flow of red ink from the state party convention would be to fire Lorelei Kinder and hire someone who knows how to make a profit.

But you’d be thinking wrong, because Mr. Parsky has hired Mrs. Kinder to run the September convention as well. We thought it was only the Democrats who rewarded failure by throwing more money at it.

SPEAKING OF BACKING LOSERS…

Who was at Game 6 of the NBA Western Conference finals, hoopin’ and hollerin’ for the Sacramento Kings against the Los Angeles Lakers?: none other than L.A.’s own Gerry Parsky. Rather than devoting much-needed time into unscrewing party operations and figuring out basic matter like how to raise money, Gerry was stabbing his home team in the back and cheering and high-fiving for another gang that can’t shoot straight.
